Cấu trúc Would Rather trong tiếng Anh – Cách dùng chi tiết, ví dụ, mẹo thi và bài tập

1) “Would rather” là gì? Khi nào dùng?

Would rather diễn tả sở thích/lựa chọn ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai, thường mang nghĩa “thích… hơn”, “muốn… hơn”.
Khác với prefer (mang tính chung chung, thói quen), would rather thiên về quyết định tại thời điểm nói hoặc trong một tình huống cụ thể.

• I’d rather stay at home tonight.
  Tôi muốn ở nhà tối nay hơn.
• She’d rather not talk about it.
  Cô ấy không muốn nói về việc đó.

Dạng rút gọn: I’d rather = I would rather; he’d rather = he would rather.

2) Công thức cốt lõi

2.1. Với cùng chủ ngữ (người nói làm hành động)

• S + would rather + V(bare infinitive) (+ than + V(bare))
  • I’d rather walk than take a taxi.
  • They’d rather wait here.

Phủ định: đặt not ngay sau would rather

• I’d rather not go out.
• She’d rather not say anything.

Liên quan hiện tại/tương lai:

• I’d rather leave now. (bây giờ/đêm nay)
• We’d rather start early tomorrow. (tương lai gần)

2.2. Với khác chủ ngữ (muốn người khác làm gì)

• S + would rather + S’ + V(quá khứ đơn) → mong muốn về hiện tại/tương lai (dạng “lùi thì lịch sự”)
  • I’d rather you didn’t smoke here.
  • She’d rather he stayed at home tonight.
• S + would rather + S’ + had + V3/ed → mong muốn về quá khứ (điều đã xảy ra rồi, muốn khác đi)
  • I’d rather you hadn’t told him the secret.

Lưu ý: Vế sau không dùng “would”, mà dùng quá khứ đơn (hiện tại/tương lai) hoặc quá khứ hoàn (quá khứ) để thể hiện khoảng cách/lịch sự.

2.3. Nhấn mạnh tiến trình

• Would rather + be + V-ing (đang/chuẩn bị làm)
  • I’d rather be reading than working right now.
• Would rather + have + V3/ed (điều ước cho quá khứ của chính mình)
  • I’d rather have stayed at home yesterday.

3) “Would rather … than …”: song song hình thức

Khi nối bằng than, cần song song về cấu trúc:

• I’d rather cook than order food. (V nguyên mẫu – V nguyên mẫu)
• She’d rather be working than be waiting. (be V-ing – be V-ing)
• They’d rather have left early than have stayed late. (have V3 – have V3)

Có thể lược lại chủ ngữ/động từ nếu rõ nghĩa:

• I’d rather drive than take the bus.
• I’d rather drive than (take) walk. → sai (không song song)

4) “Would rather” so với prefer / would prefer / had better

Quy đổi ý tưởng:

• I’d rather stay in than go out.
  ≈ I’d prefer to stay in rather than go out.
  ≈ I prefer staying in to going out.

5) Thời và khung thời gian

5.1. Hiện tại/tương lai – bare infinitive (cùng chủ ngữ)

• I’d rather study tonight.
• We’d rather not discuss it now.

5.2. Mong người khác làm (hiện tại/tương lai) – quá khứ đơn

• I’d rather you left early.
• They’d rather she didn’t talk to the press.

5.3. Mong người khác đã không làm (quá khứ) – had + V3

• I’d rather you hadn’t posted that photo.

5.4. Mong bản thân khác đi trong quá khứ – have + V3

• I’d rather have studied harder at school.

6.1. Hỏi lựa chọn

• Would you rather + V or V?
  • Would you rather cook or eat out?
  • Would you rather work remotely or on-site?

6.2. Trả lời ngắn

• I’d rather cook. / I’d rather not.
• I’d rather (do) A than (do) B.

6.3. Trang trọng hơn

• Would you prefer to + V (rather than + V)?

7) “Would sooner” – biến thể đồng nghĩa

Would sooner ≈ would rather, sắc thái hơi văn chương/nhấn mạnh.

• I’d sooner quit than compromise my principles.
• She’d sooner walk than ask for help.

1. Dùng “to V” sau would rather

• ❌ I’d rather to stay home.

2. Không song song sau “than”

3. Sai thì khi muốn người khác làm

• ❌ I’d rather you don’t smoke.

4. Sai thì với quá khứ của người khác

5. Nhầm với “had better”

9.1. IELTS Speaking

• Part 1 (sở thích):
  • I’d rather read e-books than paperbacks, mainly because they’re more portable.
• Part 2 (kể chuyện – lựa chọn):
  • If I had a free weekend, I’d rather stay in the mountains than spend it in the city.
• Part 3 (so sánh quan điểm):
  • Personally, I’d rather governments invested in public transport than subsidised private cars.
    (khác chủ ngữ giả định → dùng quá khứ đơn sau would rather)

Hạn chế dùng ở Task 2 (tránh “I”), nhưng có thể dùng gián tiếp:
