1. So sánh kép là gì?

So sánh kép là nhóm cấu trúc so sánh diễn tả mối quan hệ thay đổi đồng thời giữa hai yếu tố, hoặc mức độ tăng giảm lặp lại theo thời gian. Có hai nhóm chính:

• Cấu trúc quan hệ: the + comparative, the + comparative
  Diễn tả quan hệ tỉ lệ: cái này càng… thì cái kia càng…
  Ví dụ: The earlier you start, the better you perform.
  Ý nghĩa: Bắt đầu càng sớm thì hiệu quả càng tốt.
• Cấu trúc lặp tăng giảm: Adj/Adv-er and Adj/Adv-er; more and more + Adj/Adv; less and less + Adj/Adv; fewer and fewer + plural nouns
  Diễn tả mức độ tăng dần hoặc giảm dần.
  Ví dụ: Prices are getting higher and higher.
  Ví dụ: The process is becoming more and more efficient.
  Ví dụ: He drives less and less carefully these days.
  Ví dụ: Fewer and fewer customers pay in cash.

2. Cấu trúc so sánh kép “the + comparative, the + comparative”

Công thức tổng quát:
The + comparative (+ S + V), the + comparative (+ S + V)

• Ví dụ cơ bản
  The more you practice, the more confident you become.
  The longer we wait, the more expensive it gets.
  The sooner we finish, the sooner we can leave.
• Biến thể với danh từ và trạng từ
  The more information you provide, the faster we can process your request.
  The more carefully you check the data, the fewer mistakes you will make.
  The more demanding the client is, the more precisely we must plan.
• Gợi ý chấm phẩy và dấu phẩy
  Trong văn viết trang trọng, nên dùng dấu phẩy để ngăn hai mệnh đề: The more…, the more….
  Có thể đảo vị trí mệnh đề mà nghĩa không đổi: The more confident you become, the more you practice nghe gượng; nên giữ logic nguyên nhân – kết quả.
• Cặp nghĩa trái lập thông dụng
  The more…, the less…
  The less…, the more…
  Ví dụ: The more you explain, the less confused they are.
  Ví dụ: The less time we waste, the more productive we are.
• Cặp với danh từ đếm được
  The fewer emails you send, the clearer the thread will be.
  The fewer errors we make, the higher the score is.

3. Cấu trúc lặp tăng giảm theo thời gian

• Adj/Adv-er and Adj/Adv-er
  Dùng với tính từ ngắn và trạng từ ngắn.
  Prices are higher and higher.
  She runs faster and faster before the finish line.
• More and more + Adj/Adv; More and more + plural nouns/uncountable nouns
  The system is getting more and more stable.
  We receive more and more inquiries every week.
  There is more and more traffic on the website after the campaign.
• Less and less + Adj/Adv; Fewer and fewer + plural nouns
  He seems less and less interested in the project.
  Fewer and fewer customers attend the offline seminar.
• So sánh với động từ “get / become / grow / turn / become increasingly”
  Sales are becoming increasingly volatile.
  The market is getting more competitive.
  Workloads grow heavier and heavier near the deadline.

4. Quy tắc ngữ pháp và lựa chọn từ

• Chọn comparative đúng
  Tính từ ngắn: -er than; tính từ dài: more/less + adj than.
  Với cấu trúc lặp: dùng -er and -er cho tính từ ngắn; more and more cho tính từ dài.
• Chọn fewer hay less
  Fewer dùng cho danh từ đếm được số nhiều. Less dùng cho danh từ không đếm được.
  The project requires fewer meetings and less paperwork.
• Trạng từ -ly dùng với more and more / less and less
  Emails are being handled more and more efficiently.
  He responds less and less promptly.
• Giữ tính song song nghĩa
  The more accurate the forecast is, the more reliable the plan becomes.
  Tránh The more accurate, the cheaper we can produce nếu không có mối liên hệ hợp lý.

• Nhầm lẫn fewer và less

• Sai dạng so sánh của tính từ dài
